I was turned onto this drink before my book-devouring binge began many months ago via this article which is an interview with Ted Haigh (aka ‘Dr. Cocktail’ – as you probably well know) in Modern Drunkard Magazine. In full disclosure I am neither a huge whiskey fan or much of a grapefruit fan on its own, but when Dr. Cocktail himself states that, when forced to choose, this is one drink he’d like to see revived. Well, hmmmmmm, ok then, who am I to argue?

First off, getting Rye Whiskey was not as easy a task I’d assumed it would be. After shopping several liquor stores I finally found two bottles of the stuff, buried on the bottom shelf of the store somewhere near the cheap bourbons and the jars of corn whiskey that almost seem sold for novelty’s sake. And only one brand smiled dustily up at me, Jim Beam. Well, dance with them what brung you…I bought it, though with trepidation as even the guys behind the counter (who know me well) raised their eyebrows a tad at this purchase.
